Minimally Invasive Procedures

Rockford Urological physicians are experts in the minimally invasive surgical procedure known as Robotic Prostatectomy. It is used for one of the most common treatments for prostate cancer: the surgical removal of the prostate, known as a prostatectomy. If your doctor recommends surgery to treat your prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for this new, less-invasive surgical procedure called robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. Most men who qualify for a robotically assisted prostatectomy find it is a less traumatic, minimally invasive approach for treating and removing prostate cancer. The robot provides advanced optics that are 10-times magnified along with three-dimensional images of the prostate and surrounding nerves and tissues. It also eliminates even the slightest tremor of a human hand.

Robotic Prostatectomy is made possible through the da Vinci Surgical System. Due to its advanced mechanical techniques it help surgeons to remove the cancerous prostate while protecting the delicate nerves that control bladder and sexual function, drastically reducing recovery time and enhancing quality of life outcomes. Patients experience smaller incisions in the abdomen, less post-operative pain, less blood loss and a speedier recovery. In terms of cancer control, in several large published studies, da Vinci Prostatectomy has shown equal or lower rates of positive surgical margins (meaning margins with cancer cells left behind) than large studies of other forms of surgery.

Studies also show that patients who undergo a da Vinci Prostatectomy may experience a faster return of urinary continence following surgery and a lower rate of urinary pain than radiation (brachytherapy) patients.
